Waking up at Crater Camp…
When we woke up in the Crater Camp at around 6am, we weren’t really well rested – the night on 5790m was tough and the Summit Day was still saping on our bodies!
We had almost -20° Celsius and the height caused headache and vomit to us… We don`t know when we finally felt asleep, but the view from our tent in the morning was breathtakingly beautiful. The sky was crystal-clear and the Furtwangler Glacier sparkled in the distance.
We found out that one of the three groups who stayed in the crater that night had to be evacuated du to height sickness at around 2am. Obviously we already slept at that time, cause we didn’t notice anything going on outside. We were still a little bit weak and felt a little “fluffy”, but the headache and vomiting was gone and so we decided to explore the crater!
The magnificent Furtwangler Glacier
The Furtwangler Glacier is magnificent and the whole crater looks like from another planet. With the blue sky and no other people around, the impression finally won over the weakness and with the sun we slowly got our power back. We would loved to have more time to check out the Ash Pit an the Crater Rim, but two people of our group already hat to descend due to the altitude, so we followed them after packing our bags.
The last look at the mountain
When descending, we got a little melancholic and sad. We couldn’t believe that we already were at the summit and in the crater and that our journey was going straight to the finish line.
We had a great lunch break at Barafu Camp (which we skipped on the way up), before heading down to Mweka Camp on 3068m, where we spent our last night on the mountain.
