Via Ferrata at “Klettersteigarena Höhenburg” Kaprun

Klettersteigarena Höhenburg Kaprun

Klettersteigarena Höhenburg: A selection of Via Ferrata for everybody 🙂

After the Spartan Race Hawai’i and all the trailruns over the last view weeks, we wanted to spent a weekend back “at the rocks”!

And as we love the area around the Großglockner so much and have a few friends from Zell am See and Kaprun, we decided to give the Klettersteigarena Höhenburg a try. The Klettersteigarena is located on a little hill between the two mountain reservoirs of Kaprun (“Kapruner Stauseen”), right at the foots of the Kitzsteinhorn, highest mountain of Salzburger Land. It consists of three fairly short 10-25 minute routes from difficulty level B/C to E, so there is something for everybody. 🙂

On the way to “Moserboden”

To reach the Via Ferrata arena, you have to take the “Lärchwandschrägaufzug”, Europe’s biggest open elevator and two buses to reach the Kapruner Stausee Moserboden. Walking or hiking up from Kaprun / the parking lot of the elevator, is an option as well and takes you approximately up to 2040m into the Großglockner mountain range. At Moserboden, there is a restaurant and kiosk and it is just a 5 minute stroll via the dam to reach the “Höhenburg”.

The three Ferrata’s are located right next to each other on the northwestern side of the little fortress hill and all end on their top at 2108m. The names are “Mooser-Mandl” (C/D), “Drossen-Hex” (E) and “Limberg-Zwerg” (B/C) and they are all very well secured. The Topo’s can be found here. They all have the same amazing view over the Stauseen, up to Kitzsteinhorn and the surrounding mountains and far back into a valley of the Großglockner range – and it is simply STUNNING!

Great views in the Ferratas at Klettersteigarena Höhenburg

Due to all the races and a lot of travel the last months and basically the whole summer, we were in a lazy mood and took the elevator. We had a perfect sunny day and as the climbing is really(!) short (Limberg-Zwerg didn’t took us 3 minutes…), wehad a lot to of time to enjoy the panoramique views from the little Höhenburg summit area. 🙂

Swim and relax in Leogang

Although we weren’t really sportive that day, we were really thankful to stay in the lovely Sporthotel Salzburger Hof Leogang afterwards for some relaxation, massage and swimming. And even during the “after-mountain-hours” we were able to swim with a mountain view, which was really great. 🙂 The hotel is located an approximately 30 minutes drive from Kaprun and offers a lot of sport activities like mountainbiking, hiking and trailrunning and is therefore the perfect spot for sport addicts like us.
